Tips & Tricks for Fried Halloumi

Slice Cheese Evenly

When you are making these cheese sticks, make sure to slice the cheese evenly. Even slices will ensure that the cheese cooks through evenly. Otherwise, you can run the risk of some getting over-baked and others being under-cooked.

Golden Brown Texture

Spritz the cheese sticks with cooking spray to give them a golden brown color. When baking the sticks, you will find they may stay pale in color. Spritzing them with oil helps create their golden crust.

Variations to Fried Halloumi

Pork Rinds

If you don’t want to use almond flour or breadcrumbs, use pork rinds instead. You can buy them pre-crumbled or you can crush them up yourself. Then just use the crushed rinds to batter the cheese.

Dipping Sauce

I made an avocado dipping sauce to go with my crispy halloumi fries. You can choose to eat your fried halloumi plain or dipped in avocado sauce, ranch dressing, marinara, or any other sauce!

Type of Flour

If you are not gluten-free or low-carb, you can use an all-purpose flour.

How do I make my cheese sticks golden brown?

If you find your halloumi cheese sticks are not turning golden brown, you can lightly baste them with oil or spray them with a cooking spray. Brushing your halloumi with oil will help to golden up the breading.

Do cheese sticks store well?

These baked halloumi cheese sticks are best served fresh. If you don’t eat them all right away, you can refrigerate the leftovers. Simply store your extra halloumi fries in an airtight container in the fridge until you’re ready to finish them.

Can you freeze cheese sticks?

Go right ahead and freeze any halloumi cheese sticks you don’t eat right away. Just place them in an airtight container and freeze up to 2–3 months.

Then when you want to cook your cheese sticks, preheat the oven and bake halloumi until warmed through and golden brown in color.

  • 2 eggs
  • 18 oz halloumi cheese
  • cup all purpose flour or coconut flour

  • Place the almond flour in another small bowl.

  • Coat the halloumi sticks first in the coconut flour mixture, then shake them to remove any excess.

  • Then dip cheese sticks in the beaten egg. Finally, roll them in almond flour until they are well coated.

  • Place the halloumi sticks onto the baking sheet and drizzle 2 tbsp of olive oil over the top.

  • Bake for 20–25 minutes or until golden brown.

  • To make the avocado mayonnaise, just mix the ingredients together and enjoy!

Notes

  • You could make these fries in an Air Fryer; just make sure not to overlap them on the trays. Cook halloumi sticks at 400°F for 8–10 minutes.
  • To make this recipe keto-friendly and gluten-free, use almond flour in place of the panko breadcrumbs and coconut flour in place of the all purpose flour.
