No summer dinner party is complete without a giant caprese salad. It’s simple, fresh, and the layers of juicy tomatoes and creamy mozzarella is a personal favorite of mine. But when I want my guests to enjoy these flavors in bite sized form – these caprese skewers are always a hit!

They’re super fun and always look festive on a platter. Plus, they only take a few minutes to make – you can even make them ahead of time! So if you know you’ve got a hungry crowd, I’d double the recipe. These always disappear fast!

What You’ll Need For Caprese Skewers

Caprese salads are all about using fresh summer ingredients. And with tomatoes and basil in peak season, I recommend grabbing the highest quality you can find. It makes all the difference!

  • Tomatoes: Both cherry or grape tomatoes will work here. But if you want a juicier tomato bite and a perfectly round shape, cherry tomatoes are best.
  • Mozzarella Balls: Since you want the mozzarella balls about the same size as the tomatoes, look for containers of ciliegine mozzarella balls. And for a little extra flavor, buy the marinated ones!
  • Basil Leaves: Any size basil leaves work, but if you’re using large leaves just fold them in half as you thread them on.
  • Balsamic Glaze: Making a homemade balsamic glaze is a cinch, but you can also use a store-bought version.

Once you’ve got all your ingredients, make sure to grab a pack of wooden skewers! You should be able to find them at your local market on online.

How To Make Caprese Skewers

Once you’ve got all your ingredients, assembly comes super easy. Here’s how to make them.

  • Assemble the skewers. You can honestly assemble in any combination. But I like to start with a cherry tomato, followed by a basil leaf, mozzarella ball, another basil leaf, and lastly another tomato.
  • Drizzle on the good stuff. Right before serving, drizzle the skewers with balsamic glaze and you’re ready to go!

A quick tip: if you’re making your own balsamic glaze make sure to reduce it for a bit longer, so that it’s extra thick. Otherwise, the glaze will slide right off the tomatoes and mozzarella balls.

The Best Make Ahead Appetizer

On a time crunch? Make these caprese skewers up to four hours in advance and store in the fridge until ready to serve.

And if you’ve got leftovers (which I highly doubt you will), they will keep for up to 2-3 days in the fridge.
