We love to make this garlic knots recipe when we’re entertaining. The soft, fluffy knots always impress guests, but, secretly, they’re super easy to make!

Garlic knots

I’m trying to think of something more delicious than warm garlic knots fresh out of the oven. …And I’m giving up. It’s just not possible. Garlic knots deliver everything you love about dinner rolls – soft! fluffy! – plus an extra kick of rich, savory garlic flavor. And because they can pass as an appetizer, snack, or even a side dish with the right meal, there’s never an occasion where they’re out of place. If you want to be the life of the party at any gathering you’re attending this season, my advice to you is simple: make this garlic knots recipe.

Garlic knots recipe ingredients

Garlic Knots Recipe Ingredients

Another great thing about garlic knots? They come together with a few basic ingredients:

  • Garlic, of course! It gives these garlic knots their irresistible garlicky flavor.
  • All-purpose and whole wheat flour – My #1 tip for making this recipe is to weigh your flour. That way, you’ll know you’re using the correct amount. If you don’t have a kitchen scale, use the spoon-and-level method to avoid packing too much flour into your measuring cups. Read more about it here!
  • Active dry yeast – It helps the knots rise.
  • Maple syrup – It adds a slight sweetness to the dough and helps activate the yeast.
  • Warm water – For moisture.
  • Extra-virgin olive oil – You’ll add some to the dough and brush the rest on top with the garlic.
  • And salt – To round out the knots’ rich, savory flavor.

Hands around ball of dough

How to Make Garlic Knots

This garlic knots recipe is really simple (and fun!) to make. Here’s how it goes:

First, make the dough. I use a stand mixer fitted with a dough hook to make this process super easy. When the dough forms a ball around the hook, turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Knead it a few times, dusting it with a bit more flour if it’s still sticky.

Form the dough into a ball and place it in a large bowl brushed with olive oil. Cover the bowl with plastic wrap and let the dough rise until it doubles in size.

8 equal pieces of dough on marble surface

Next, shape the knots. When the dough has risen, punch it down and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface. Cut it into 8 equal pieces.

Hands rolling dough into rope

Roll each piece into a 9-inch rope…

Hands folding dough rope into knot shape

…and tie it into a knot.

Hands tying knot with dough

Once you create the knot, tuck the loose ends under it to form a neat roll.

Unbaked garlic knot on marble surface

Voila! And don’t worry – if it doesn’t look perfect, it’ll still taste great. (I speak from experience.)

8 unbaked garlic knots on marble surface

Repeat the shaping process with the remaining dough.

Unbaked garlic knots on baking sheet

And bake! Arrange the garlic knots on a large baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake at 450° for 11 to 13 minutes, or until deeply golden brown. While the knots bake, mix the remaining olive oil with the grated garlic. Brush this garlic oil over the knots as soon as they come out of the oven.

If you like, you can garnish them with other toppings, too. I love parsley, red pepper flakes, flaky salt, and Parmesan cheese. My vegan Parmesan would also be great.

Enjoy!

  • Chopped parsley
  • Flaky sea salt
  • Grated Parmesan or Vegan Parmesan

Meatballs Ingredients

Ingredients to make Garlic Butter Turkey Meatballs.
  • Ground turkey: lean ground turkey is great but if you can use a fattier ground turkey if you prefer.
  • Mozzarella cheese: this adds flavor and helps the meatballs bind together and stay moist.
  • Egg: the egg helps bind the meatballs together.
  • Seasoning: I season the meatballs with ground pepper, red pepper flakes, salt, onion powder, garlic powder, and Italian seasoning.
  • Oil: use whichever oil you prefer.
  • Butter: you’ll want to use unsalted butter for the garlic butter sauce.
  • Lemon juice: I recommend fresh lemon juice and not bottled juice.
  • Garlic: the more garlic, the better!
  • Parsley: for some flavor and a pop of color!

Tips to Make The Best Turkey Meatballs

  • Avoid overmixing the meat mixture. It’ll cause the meatballs to become tough, heavy, and dense.
  • Avoid rolling the meatballs too tightly as it’ll cause the meatballs to be dense.
  • Use a cookie scoop to get an even amount of ground turkey mixture so the meatballs are all the same size and bake evenly.
  • The ground turkey is mild in flavor so feel free to be generous with the seasoning.
  • Avoid overcooking the meatballs. They will become dry and tough if cooked for too long.
  • If you’re not sure if the meatballs are done, check the internal temperature. It should be 165F when done.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I store leftovers turkey meatballs?

Store leftovers in an airtight container and keep them in the fridge for up to 3-5 days. You can reheat them in the oven, airfryer or microwave.

Can I freeze turkey meatballs?

I recommend freezing the meatballs before baking. Place all the meatballs on a lined sheet pan in the freezer. Once frozen, transfer them to a freezer-safe bag. When ready to eat, bake them straight from frozen with a few extra added minutes. It’s easier to make the garlic butter sauce fresh than freeze it.

Is it better to bake or pan fry meatballs?

You can do either but baking the meatballs means the recipe will be more hands-off. You can also fit more meatballs into a baking dish to cook at once than in a pan on the stovetop.

Do you turn meatballs when baking?

It’s up to you if you’d like to rotate the meatballs. This will also give the other side a chance to get the same color.

Should I brown meatballs before baking?

No, there’s no need to brown the meatballs before baking. They bake up perfectly on their own!

Why are my turkey meatballs rubbery?

If your find the meatballs to be chewy, it mean you over cooked them. Always use a cooking thermometer to check doneness at 165F.

Why did my meatballs fall apart?

When meatballs fall apart, it’s usually the binder that is the problem. Most meatball recipes call for using bread crumbs and eggs. But too much bread crumbs make them too loose, and not enough bread crumbs won’t help them hold together either.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use other cuts of chicken for this recipe?

You can use whatever chicken you have to hand, but be aware you might have to slightly adjust the cooking time. Chicken breasts and chicken thighs work well with this recipe as well. Just be sure to cut them evenly.

How do I know the chicken thighs are cooked through?

The best way to know when your chicken is done is to use a meat thermometer. Simply insert the thermometer into the thickest part of the chicken, when it reads 165F it’s done.

How do I store leftovers?

Leftovers can be stored for up to 3 days in an airtight container in the fridge. Be sure to let the chicken cool to room temperature before storing it as it will get soggy from condensation if it’s still warm.

What can I serve with Garlic Mushroom Chicken Bites?

These chicken bites are great with rice, quinoa, salad, mashed potatoes, or even some noodles. They are very versatile and goes with pretty much everything.

Are cremini mushroom same as white mushroom?

Cremini mushrooms are simply the brown version of the common white cultivated mushroom. You can also think of them as older than the white mushroom. The smaller, white button mushroom is the youngest variety, and the larger, Portobello mushrooms are older.

Can I use Portobello Mushroom instead of cremini mushroom?

Absolutely. Although, the flavor of the Portobello mushroom will be bolder than the cremini mushroom.

Garlic Butter Chicken Variations

  • Proteins: You can use different cuts of chicken like chicken breast or tenderloins. For red meat, use ribeye cubed steak. If you are looking for seafood options, I recommend using some jumbo sized shrimp or salmon cubes.
  • Vegetables: You can add any vegetable you like. The best part about this recipe is that you can add in so many things without sacrificing any flavors.
  • Herbs: Amp up the flavor by adding different fresh or dry herbs into the recipe. You can also use premade spices you like.

Another surprising use? As a natural dye for fabric. Pigment-rich skins, like those in red onions, have been used to dye textiles long before artificial coloring came about. If you want to try it yourself, Anjolie Noelle, a botanical and food waste dyer, says the best way to do it is to add the onion skins to a pot of water and let them simmer for an hour before adding the fabric. Once the fabric is in the dye, let it sit for another hour.

If dyeing your own fabric is outside of your DIY-willingness, you can use the colored water to dye Easter eggs instead.

Low-FODMAP Diet Got You Missing Garlic? Try This Basil Pesto Hack For Flavor https://lessmeatmoreveg.com/low-fodmap-diet-got-you-missing-garlic-try-this-basil-pesto-hack-for-flavor/ https://lessmeatmoreveg.com/low-fodmap-diet-got-you-missing-garlic-try-this-basil-pesto-hack-for-flavor/#respond Fri, 10 Sep 2021 20:47:12 +0000 https://lessmeatmoreveg.com/low-fodmap-diet-got-you-missing-garlic-try-this-basil-pesto-hack-for-flavor/

The low-FODMAP diet is one of the most popular options for managing IBS, and while many people use it to great success that doesn’t always mean it’s easy one to adopt. One ingredient that can be challenging to cut out is garlic—after all, there’s garlic in a number of recipes, across many cultures.

One of those recipes that often features loads of garlic is pesto, and it’s a dish that Zorah Booley found herself missing when she adopted this gut-health supporting diet. And she came up with a clever way to get all that garlic flavor, without breaking the protocol: garlic oil.

“Garlic in it’s whole form (cooked or uncooked) can trigger an IBS flare-up. But garlic oil provides the same flavor without any side effects; the more oil you add, the more intense the flavor,” she writes in The Everyday Low-FODMAP Cookbook. “This recipe is a staple for me, and it’s one I have relied on almost every day since adapting my lifestyle to account for IBS.”

Since any pesto recipe is going to feature both olive oil and garlic, a basil pesto is the perfect place to use this low-FODMAP hack. Booley’s recipe is pretty classic: Just make the homemade garlic oil first and get blending.

Grilled Garlic Chicken with Red Pepper Aioli is perfect for a low-carb dinner, and this can be cooked on a stove-top grill pan if you don’t have an outdoor grill.  And see other serving suggestions for the Grilled Garlic Chicken if you don’t want to make the sauce.

Grilled Garlic Chicken with Red Pepper Aioli on serving plate with sauce

Years ago I got infatuated with the Roasted Red Pepper and Garlic Aioli Sauce that my friend Margarethe introduced me to. I love eating that sauce on just about everything, but this Grilled Garlic Chicken with Red Pepper Aioli was an especially tasty way to serve this delicious sauce, and I’m reminding you about it for my Friday Favorites pick this week!

This is a simple marinade and you can even put chicken in the fridge to marinate when you go to bed at night, and then cook it after work the next day. The chicken is tasty, but most of all, it’s a great vehicle for delivering the sauce to your mouth!

What is Red Pepper Aioli Sauce?

Aioli is an emulsion-type sauce, similar to mayonnaise, and there are endless variations for this easy-to-make sauce. I love the Roasted Red Pepper and Garlic Aioli Sauce that we served with this chicken, and that recipe will give you lots of other ideas for using this tasty sauce.

What ingredients do you need for this recipe?

How can you keep chicken breasts from drying out on the grill?

If you’re not that experienced at grilling chicken breasts, check out the tips in my post on How to Make Juicy Grilled Chicken Breasts.

What if you don’t have an outdoor grill?

Of course I love cooking chicken on the outdoor grill. But if you don’t have an outdoor grill or it’s not grilling weather, you can cook the chicken like I did on a stove-top grill pan with ridges or it would be great cooked on a George Foreman Grill as well. (affiliate links) Remember the George Foreman Grill cooks both sides at once, so adjust the grilling time.

What else can you serve with this Grilled Garlic Chicken?

If you don’t want to make Red Pepper Aioli Sauce, the grilled garlic chicken would be great served with Avocado Salsa, Tomato-Avocado Salsa, Mango Salsa with Red Bell Pepper, Fresh Tomatillo Salsa, White Barbecue Sauce, homemade Tzatziki Sauce, Mustard-Herb Sauce, or Sriracha-Ranch Dipping Sauce.

How to make the recipe:

(Scroll down for complete recipe, including nutritional information.)

  1. Trim all visible fat and membranes from the chicken breasts, and make small slits in the chicken. (I save those scraps in the freezer and use them to make homemade chicken stock.)
  2. Whisk together the lemon juice, garlic puree, poultry seasoning, and olive oil.
  3. Put the chicken breasts in a Ziploc bag and marinate in the fridge for 6-8 hours. (This recipe makes enough marinade for 4 pieces of chicken, but I only cooked two when I tested the recipe and took these photos.)
  4. Drain red peppers, chop pepper, puree peppers, and process together other ingredients to make the Roasted Red Pepper and Garlic Aioli Sauce. Put the sauce in the fridge to chill while the chicken marinates.
  5. You can cook this chicken on a gas or charcoal grill outside, but I cooked this on a Stovetop Grill Pan (affiliate link), which made it extra easy.
  6. Whichever you’re using, let chicken come to room temperature, and oil the pan or grill grates before you preheat the pan or grill and put the chicken on.
  7. I was going to be drizzling sauce over this chicken, so I didn’t worry about grill marks, just turned it a few times, cooking about 10 minutes, or until the chicken is firm to the touch and lightly browned.
  8. Serve hot, with Red Pepper and Garlic Aioli Sauce drizzled over the Grilled Garlic Chicken!

Ingredients

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • 2 T fresh-squeezed lemon juice
  • 1 T garlic puree (or minced fresh garlic)
  • 1 tsp. dried poultry seasoning
  • 4 T olive oil
  • Roasted Red Pepper Aioli Sauce

Instructions

  1. Trim all visible fat and tendons from chicken breasts, then cut small slits going down the length of each breast. (You may want to read How to Make Juicy Grilled Chicken Breasts that are Perfect Every Time for more about how to trim chicken and make slits.)
  2. Whisk together the lemon juice, garlic, poultry seasoning, and olive oil.
  3. Put chicken in a Ziploc bag or plastic container with a tight lid that’s big enough to hold chicken in a single layer.
  4. Put chicken into bag or container, pour in marinade, seal it, and turn over a few times so the marinade is coating all the chicken.
  5. Let chicken marinate in the refrigerator for 6-8 hours, or up to 24 hours if you need to start the marinating ahead.
  6. While chicken marinates, make Roasted Red Pepper Aioli Sauce and let it chill in the fridge.
  7. When ready to cook, remove chicken from the fridge and let it come to room temperature.
  8. Oil the grill grates or grill pan with olive oil or non-stick spray.
  9. Preheat the gas or charcoal grill or stove-top grill pan to medium-high. (You can only hold your hand there for a few seconds at that heat.)
  10. Cook chicken about 4-5 minutes on first side (you can rotate it halfway through if you want grill marks, but I didn’t bother since I was serving the chicken with the sauce over it.)
  11. Turn chicken and cook 4-5 minutes more on the second side, or until chicken is firm and lightly browned.
  12. Serve hot, with Roasted Red Pepper Aioli Sauce.
