50 Thanksgiving Side Dishes: Easy Mashed Potatoes

Prep Time: 10 mins

Cook Time: 1 hr

Total Time: 1 hr 10 mins

Serves 4 to 6

  • 1 bulb roasted garlic, from this recipe
  • 2 pounds Yukon gold or butterball potatoes, peeled
  • 2 teaspoons sea salt, divided
  • cup extra-virgin olive oil
  • Freshly ground black pepper
  • Butter, optional for serving
  • Chopped chives and/or rosemary, optional for sprinkling
  • Use the back of a chef’s knife or a small masher to mash the roasted garlic into a paste before incorporating into the mashed potatoes. Set aside.

  • Place the potatoes and 1 teaspoon of salt in a large pot and fill with enough water to cover the potatoes by 1 inch. Bring to a boil and cook until fork tender, about 20 minutes. Drain, reserving 1 cup of the cooking liquid.

  • Use a ricer or a potato masher to mash the potatoes into a large bowl. Use a rubber spatula to fold in the roasted garlic, olive oil, ½ cup of the reserved cooking liquid, 1 teaspoon salt, and several pinches of pepper. Continue folding until creamy, adding up to ½ cup more cooking liquid if desired for creamier potatoes. Serve hot with butter, rosemary, and chives, if desired.

Simple side dish ideas for beef (no recipe needed)

collage of easy keto side dishes
Simple side dishes for beef

These ideas are so simple that there’s no recipe required! I love experimenting with all the different flavors, sauces, and seasonings that make each of these side dishes the perfect match for beef! Choose a few of these side dishes and enjoy.

Green beans

Whether you sautee fresh green beans in butter or grab a can of green beans and re-heat, this side pairs well with red meat.

I particularly like mine with a squeeze of lemon juice over the top for extra flavor. Green beans however are a higher carb vegetable so make sure you portion control them and add them into your daily carb limit.

Salad

Salad is a simple and versatile side dish that can be made a million different ways. Make a pile of leafy greens and add extra virgin olive oil and low-sugar balsamic vinegar dressing, or squeeze some lemon juice on.

You can even just grab a salad kit from the grocery store – just make sure to watch for sneakily added carbs!

Roasted veggies

Grab some cauliflower, broccoli or any other hardy veggie like carrots (just watch the carbs). Chop them into uniform pieces, add some oil and spices like thyme, and roast until they are crispy on the outside and tender on the inside!

Sauteed greens

Heat some olive oil and garlic over a pan, then add in your greens. You can enjoy collard greens, chard, kale, or spinach—or a combination! Feel free to experiment with seasonings and toppings. Its truly delicious!

Simple steamed low-carb vegetables

Simple steamed or boiled broccoli and cauliflower are easy mid-week side dishes. Always keep a supply of fresh or frozen vegetables at hand.

Low-carb condiments for your steak

Last, but not least, part of the fun of enjoying steak is the sauce you serve it with!

Here are some of my favourite steak toppings and seasonings:

  • blue cheese – the creamy tanginess of blue cheese is the perfect pairing for tender, juicy steak. If you aren’t a blue cheese fan, try gargonzola cheese or even shaved parmesan.
  • ketchup – but make sure to watch the carbs and added sugar. Get my Instant Pot sugar-free ketchup recipe here.
  • bbq sauce – again, you’ll have to watch out for the carb count. If you want a guilt free version, try my delicious tangy keto bbq sauce. It only has 1 gram net carbs per 2 tablespoons!
  • a creamy sauce like this cream cheese mushroom sauce. It’s fantastic!
  • minced garlic and butter – another classic topping. It’s as simple as adding a generous pat of butter and some garlic or chives on top of your steak.
  • red wine sauce – cook your steak in a red wine reduction with some seasonings.
  • salt and pepper for classic flavor.

What side dishes can you have on the keto diet with chicken? What sides have zero carbs? Is cauliflower keto?

This is the supreme guide to keto side dishes and is perfect for beginners. Discover the BEST side dish recipes that are keto-friendly.

What to serve with chicken? The best keto side dishes for beginners.

I am often asked what side dish recipes can you enjoy on your keto diet when you are making chicken. Can you have sweet potatoes on keto? Can you have green beans? Are there any side dishes that are zero carb? Are there keto onion rings?

These are the best keto side dish recipes for beginners, plus sauces, and even keto bread recipes too.

Is chicken low carb?

Yes, chicken is zero carbs, high protein, and low fat or moderate fat depending on the cut of chicken you buy. Chicken is versatile and can be used in so many ways.

Chicken nutrition will depend on which part of the chicken you are cooking so calculate your food tracker accordingly.

I am often asked, “do I calculate raw or cooked chicken”? It doesn’t matter as long as you choose the correct raw or cooked value in your carb tracker.

Frozen vegetables vs fresh vegetables – which is best?

Diagram showing the carb value in vegetables
Carbs in vegetable charts

It is a common misconception that fresh vegetables are always better than frozen vegetables or canned vegetables. But it’s often not the case. There are so many factors to consider such as, have the vegetables (fresh or frozen) been blanched? Deodorised? Bleached or irradiated?

Vegetables are full of water, fibre, vitamins, and anti-oxidants. Frozen vegetables are picked when they are their best and are often immediately snap-frozen and retain a higher nutritional value than fresh.

Fresh fruit and vegetables are often picked weeks before they are fully ripened to allow them to spend weeks in cold storage and transported to your grocery shelf and then stored in your fridge.

So the real question is…is a frozen vegetable frozen at its peak better or worse than fresh vegetables that have been recently picked, cared for, and stored properly and at their prime? And no, not the old wilted, dried, gnarly salad bag at the back of your chiller drawer!

If you know you are always throwing away fresh vegetables, then it’s probably better for you to buy frozen vegetables. It’s an easy way to make low-carb and keto cheaper too. (1) (2)

It can be confusing to understand the carbs in sauces, which sauces have added sugars, which sauces to enjoy, and which sauces to avoid on your keto diet.

You also need to understand what is a portion size for sauces (because food companies often reduce the suggested serving size so to make the nutritional information appear better than it is).

Luckily these low-carb sauces are the perfect sauce to go with chicken and the chicken side dishes above.

Store-bought sauces – always check nutrition labels for added sugar. However, the most popular sauces that are keto-friendly are:

  • Dijon mustard
  • tabasco
  • chipotle tabasco
  • keto-friendly oils such as lime flavored extra virgin olive oil
  • small amounts of balsamic vinegar
  • black pepper
  • other spices and seasonings such as lemon pepper or everything bagel seasoning.

No More Bland Grains: These Two Tasty Quinoa Dishes Are Ready In Minutes https://lessmeatmoreveg.com/no-more-bland-grains-these-two-tasty-quinoa-dishes-are-ready-in-minutes/ https://lessmeatmoreveg.com/no-more-bland-grains-these-two-tasty-quinoa-dishes-are-ready-in-minutes/#respond Fri, 26 Mar 2021 22:07:53 +0000 https://lessmeatmoreveg.com/no-more-bland-grains-these-two-tasty-quinoa-dishes-are-ready-in-minutes/

Quinoa is one of those foods that can be wonderful or just, well, fine. Cooking and flavoring it right is key to making this ancient grain live up to its tasty potential.

It’s also worth noting, although we refer to it as an ancient grain, quinoa is actually a seed: naturally gluten-free, it’s part of a group known as ‘pseudo-cereal grains’ along with amaranth and buckwheat. It was first cultivated over 3,000 years ago by Incan communities in South America, and continues to be a satiating staple to this day.

Now, to pack your quinoa with pizazz, look no further than these quick and easy Instant Pot recipes. Both begin with cooking the grains in stock, which helps make them super flavorful and adds bonus nutrients. Pair them with a lean protein and some veggies for a nutrient-packed dinner, or batch cook some on Sunday as a ready-to-go base for grain bowls and salads all week.
