Instant Pot Cabbage and Sausage – Kalyn’s Kitchen

Cabbage and Sausage are classic Irish foods, and here’s a new recipe for Instant Pot Cabbage and Sausage to make while cabbage is on sale. And leftovers of this are great just reheated in a frying pan!

Even though there are a lot of Cabbage Recipes on my blog, every March when cabbage goes on sale for St. Patrick’s Day I can’t resist coming up with at least one more recipe that uses cabbage, since I’m such a cabbage fan. And sausage and cabbage are both traditional Irish foods, so I think this Instant Pot Cabbage and Sausage would even be great to make for a St. Patrick’s Day dinner, especially if you’re not making corned beef!

The cabbage only needs one minute under pressure in the Instant Pot! However, I do want to urge you to brown the sausage in a pan like I did. I know lots of Instant Pot fans don’t like to use another pan for browning, but for this recipe you want the browned sausage on top of the cabbage for more flavor and deglazing the frying pan with the chicken broth and then pouring it over the cabbage also adds flavor. Even with that step this is very quick and easy recipe.

And I was pleasantly surprised at how good leftovers were when I heated a little olive oil in a hot skillet and quickly pan-fried the leftover cabbage and sausage for a few minutes. What ingredients do you need for this recipe?

  • olive oil
  • pre-cooked sausage (I used all-beef Kielbasa.)
  • cabbage
  • butter
  • chicken broth
  • salt and fresh-ground black pepper

How to Make Instant Pot Sausage and Cabbage:

  1. Cut sausage into slices, heat olive oil in frying pan, and start to brown the sausage.
  2. Chop up cabbage and put into the Instant Pot.
  3. Turn over each piece of sausage and brown the other side.
  4. Put browned sausage on top of the cabbage.
  5. Deglaze the pan with chicken broth, and then pour that over the sausage and cabbage.
  6. Add butter to Instant Pot.
  7. Set Instant Pot to MANUAL, HIGH PRESSURE, 1 MINUTE.
  8. Use QUICK RELEASE when cooking time ends.
  9. Season with salt and fresh-ground black pepper and serve hot.

Make it a Low-Carb Meal:

This would be delicious with Pureed Cauliflower with Garlic, Parmesan, and Goat Cheese to replace the traditional Irish potatoes. I’d also love it with Low-Carb Twice-Baked Cauliflower or Easy Cheesy Baked Keto Cauliflower.

Ingredients

  • 1 T olive oil
  • 1 lb. Kielbasa sausage (see notes)
  • 1 head cabbage (see notes)
  • 1 cup chicken broth
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • salt and fresh-ground black pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Cut sausage into slices about 3/4 inch thick.
  2. Heat olive oil in a large frying pan over medium heat and start to brown the sausage.
  3. Chop up the head of cabbage and put cabbage into the Instant Pot.
  4. When sausage is brown on one side, turn over each piece and cook until the other side is browned.
  5. Put browned sausage on top of the cabbage in the Instant Pot.
  6. Deglaze the pan you cooked the sausage in with the chicken broth, and then pour that over the sausage and cabbage.
  7. Add butter on top of the cabbage and sausage.
  8. Set Instant Pot to MANUAL, HIGH PRESSURE, 1 MINUTE.
  9. Use QUICK RELEASE when cooking time ends.
  10. Season with salt and fresh-ground black pepper and serve hot.

Notes

I used all-beef Kielbasa, but use the sausage you prefer. Some sausage comes in a 14 oz. package, which will still be fine for this recipe.

This is a tasty dish for low-carb and low-glycemic diet plans, although cabbage does have some carbs. It would probably be too high in fat for the original South Beach Diet.
